MAF
has
created and developed a programme of drama educational workshops
called “Stay Safe” which is currently being taken into secondary
schools.
We
have
developed a film script from a highly successful stage play called
“One
of Our Ain”
written by our founder Sandra Brown. It is virtual theatre in that
the actress is the person who actually experienced what is
dramatized. Adapted from her best selling book “Where
There is Evil”
(Pan Macmillan), it
is based on Sandra’s own childhood and involvement in a real life
situation - the tragic abduction of 11 year old Moira Anderson from
Coatbridge in 1957- which is now likely Scotland’s longest unsolved
cold case. The play deals with family relationships, betrayal,
domestic violence, murder, paedophiles in the community and the
damage they cause, and the lasting impact on victims and families
over generations. The play has toured overseas, mostly recently New
York, and has received superb feedback including:
‘Wonderfully
performed, a beautiful depiction of human resilience’- 3 Weeks, Ed
Fest
‘A
searing personal testimony………remarkable.’ Manchester Evening
News
‘Real
life theatre…an exceptionally moving performance.’

From
the play,
we have created a DVD of significant quality also called “One
of Our Ain.”
Filmed by Scope Productions Ltd, its premiere is in November 2010.
The DVD is available to purchase from the charity at a cost of £10.00.
We
now
provide a teaching resource pack of interest to schools, churches,
youth organizations, etc, as well as colleges, universities and child
protection agencies, which includes the DVD, a CD of music from the
play, and guidelines to help trainers and teachers exploring issues
raised in the play. The suggested guidelines assist discussions on
this form of
drama, on language, on power and on community safety. The pack has
leaflets and materials to promote engagement with important personal
issues, relating to citizenship, and to individuals personally taking
responsibility.
Sandra’s
bestseller and also
the script of her play are included in THE STAY SAFE PACK which is now available from MAF, priced £65.
We believe it will go a
long way to
promote awareness of personal safety to schools and also to groups
that may wish to have child protection higher on their agenda, or who
would welcome having the issues explored more fully at a very
practical level.
The
Project is unique and has received a lot of praise for its innovative
approach as it works on a number of levels, and delivers a thought
provoking and down to earth way of ensuring difficult topics are
covered without sensationalism or scaring people.
The
resource pack is available to appropriate groups and organisations.
